A practical 2026 breakdown of CPA eligibility for non-commerce graduates - credits, coursework gaps, state pathways, and how to close them faster.

The Short Answer

  • CPA full form: Certified Public Accountant - the U.S. equivalent of India’s CA, and a licensed, government-regulated credential.

  • You do not need a B.Com. No U.S. State Board asks for a commerce degree by name.

  • What they do ask for is credit hours and specific coursework. That is a gap you can fill - not a wall.

  • B.Tech, B.A., B.Sc., BBA and 3-year graduates clear the US CPA course every year. The route is just mapped differently.

What CPA Eligibility Actually Measures

CPA eligibility is assessed on three things - none of which is your degree title.

Requirement

What State Boards look for

Typical Indian position

Total credits

120 credits to sit for the CPA exam; 150 for licensure (in most states)

3-year degree = 90–120 credits

Accounting coursework

24–30 credits in accounting subjects

Low for engineers and arts graduates

Business coursework

24 credits in business/finance/economics

Partial for BBA/BA Economics

1 U.S. academic year = 30 credit hours. So 120 credits = 4 years of study, and a 3-year Indian bachelor’s usually lands at 90–120 depending on university tier and NAAC ‘A’ accreditation.

The 2026 Update That Changes the Maths

The biggest shift in CPA licensure in decades is now live:

  • In May 2025, AICPA and NASBA amended the Uniform Accountancy Act to permit a 120-credit licensure pathway.

  • As of 2026, 44 states have enacted this alternative, with more effective dates rolling through 2027.

  • The trade is simple: bachelor’s degree (120 credits) + 2 years of supervised experience, instead of 150 credits + 1 year.

  • Three routes now co-exist in adopting states:

    • Master’s with accounting concentration + 1 year experience

    • Bachelor’s + 30 extra credits (150 total) + 1 year experience

    • Bachelor’s (120 credits) + 2 years experience

Why this matters for non-commerce graduates: the pressure has moved from “collect 30 more credits” to “choose the right state board.” Two candidates with identical transcripts can face very different timelines depending on jurisdiction - which is why Miles Education runs a free CPA eligibility check before enrolment rather than after.

Your Background → Your Route

Your degree

Where you usually stand

Fastest realistic route

B.Tech / B.E.

120+ credits, but almost no accounting coursework

Bridge programme or M.Com/MBA (Finance) to add accounting credits

B.A. / B.Sc. (3-year)

90–120 credits, minimal business coursework

Bridge programme (30 credits) + accounting concentration

B.A. Economics / BBA

120 credits, partial business coursework

Top-up accounting credits only

B.Com (3-year, NAAC ‘A’, 1st division)

Often 120 credits

Directly exam-eligible in many states

B.Com + M.Com / MBA / CA / CMA / CS

150 credits

Eligible for exam and licensure track

4-year degree (NEP 2020)

120 credits

Exam-eligible; add 30 for the 150 route

Pre-Education Eligibility: in several jurisdictions, a 3-year B.Com/BBA holder at 120 credits can now apply to sit for the CPA exam on proof of enrolment into an approved bridge programme - so you start studying while the credits complete.

Why CPA in India Is a Non-Commerce Opportunity

  • India’s 1,700+ Global Capability Centres are the single largest demand driver for CPA USA talent.

  • Freshers with CPA certification see ₹8–12 LPA at Big 4 firms and MNC shared-services centres.

  • With 3–5 years’ experience: ₹18–25 LPA in controllership, reporting and advisory.

  • Engineers and data-literate arts graduates are advantaged here - CPA accounting roles are increasingly automation-heavy, and technical backgrounds convert well into FP&A, systems audit (ISC) and controls.

“AI is not replacing accountants,” says Varun Jain, CEO, Miles Education - his point being that accountants who use AI well are displacing those who don’t.

That thesis is now a credential. Miles’ CAIRA (Certified AI-Ready Accountant) - India’s first AI credential built for accounting and finance - offers 30+ hours of NASBA-approved CPE covering Copilot, Power BI and agentic workflows across audit, tax and advisory. For a B.Tech graduate entering CPA accounting, it converts an existing strength into a visible qualification.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Picking a state before evaluation. The evaluation report determines your options, not the other way round.

  • Assuming 150 credits are still compulsory. In 44 states, they aren’t - but the substitute is two years of verified experience.

  • Ignoring coursework composition. You can hit 120 credits and still fail the accounting-concentration test.

  • Counting diplomas that don’t evaluate. Only recognised, evaluated qualifications add credits.

FAQs

1. Can I do CPA after B.Tech?

Yes. Engineers are eligible once accounting and business coursework credits are added, usually via a bridge programme or a master’s degree.

2. Is CPA possible with a 3-year degree?

Yes. A 3-year degree from a NAAC ‘A’ institution with first division is often assessed at 120 credits, making you exam-eligible in several states.

3. What is the CPA full form?

Certified Public Accountant, licensed by U.S. State Boards of Accountancy.

4. Do arts graduates qualify for the US CPA course?

Yes, provided the accounting and business credit requirements are met. The degree stream itself is not a disqualifier.

5. How long does the CPA course take?

Typically 12–18 months for the four exams, and 18–30 months to full licensure including experience.

6. Does CPA require work experience?

Yes - 1 year on the 150-credit route, or 2 years on the 120-credit route, verified by a licensed CPA.

7. Which state board should I choose?

It depends on your evaluated credits, SSN requirements and experience plans. Get a CPA eligibility check done first.
