Master CPA exam time with section-wise MCQ vs TBS pacing, 2026 exam dates, pass rates and the 30-month time limit - a plan built for Indian candidates.

Most candidates who fail don't run out of knowledge. They run out of clock. Every section gives you exactly 240 minutes, and the simulations sitting in the back half of the exam are where that budget quietly disappears. Here's how to spend CPA exam time deliberately - section by section.

The 240-Minute Rule: What You're Actually Budgeting

  • Every section of the exam is 4 hours long, with no exceptions - 16 hours of testing across all four sections.

  • Each section runs as 5 testlets: 2 MCQ testlets, then 3 TBS testlets.

  • A standardised 15-minute break is offered after the first TBS testlet, and it does not count against your four hours. Take it.

  • MCQ testlet 2 is adaptive - a harder second testlet is usually a good sign, not a reason to panic.

  • Scoring is 50% MCQ / 50% TBS in every section except ISC, where MCQs carry 60%.

"Pacing matters more than most candidates expect. Four hours sounds like plenty of time, but the TBSs in the second half are significantly more time-intensive than MCQs." - Kyle, Maxwell CPA Review, on 90+ scoring strategy

How to read this table:

  • FAR and BAR have the fewest MCQs but the heaviest simulations - your MCQ pace can be relaxed, your TBS discipline cannot.

  • AUD and ISC are MCQ-dense. At 78 and 82 questions, a 20-second overrun per question costs you nearly half an hour.

  • REG carries the most TBSs (8). Budget ~17 minutes each and move on from anything that stalls.

  • Always reserve the final 15 minutes to revisit flagged items and confirm nothing was left blank.

  • The cpa exam pass rate first time is not published separately by the AICPA - these are attempt-level national figures across all candidates.

  • FAR and BAR sit near 41–43%, and both are the sections where simulations eat the most minutes.

  • The AICPA has been clear that movement in pass rates reflects candidate preparedness, not shifting exam difficulty.

2026 Exam Dates and the Time Limit You Can't Ignore

US CPA exam dates 2026 / CPA exam release dates:

Item

2026 Position

Core sections (AUD, FAR, REG)

Continuous testing, year-round, Mon–Sat

Discipline sections (BAR, ISC, TCP)

First month of each quarter - Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct

Core score releases

Rolling, roughly every 2–3 weeks (16 target dates)

Discipline score releases

~6–7 weeks after each window closes

Blackouts

Short 3–5 day maintenance gaps between cycles

  • How many times is the CPA exam conducted in a year? Core sections: effectively any working day. Disciplines: four windows a year.

  • CPA exam time limit: once you pass your first section, you have a 30-month rolling window to clear the rest (36 months in Indiana, South Carolina and Washington).

  • How much time does CPA take? Realistically 12–18 months at 300–450 total study hours - FAR alone typically demands 120–150 hours.

  • Is the CPA exam conducted in India? Yes. Eight Prometric cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Trivandrum, with an international administration fee payable per section before scheduling.

Five Habits That Protect Your Clock

  • Set checkpoint times, not question times. Note the clock reading you want at the end of each testlet, then check only at testlet boundaries.

  • Use the 90-second rule on MCQs. Best guess, flag, move. An unanswered MCQ is a guaranteed zero; a guessed one is 25%.

  • Read the TBS requirement first, then the exhibits. Reading source documents before you know what's being asked is the single biggest time leak.

  • Bank partial credit. TBSs are scored per response - fill in what you know and leave the rest rather than perfecting one cell.

  • Practice in full 4-hour blocks. Endurance is a skill; simulate at least three timed mocks per section.

Build the Habit Before You Book the Slot

Pacing is trainable, and it is best trained with feedback. Miles Education's US CPA programme runs timed, section-wise mocks that mirror the real testlet sequence, so candidates walk into Prometric already knowing what minute 120 should feel like. Start by confirming your 120/150-credit position on the CPA eligibility page before you plan a testing calendar.

There's a second clock worth watching too. As AI absorbs routine reconciliation and review work, the minutes accountants save are being redeployed into judgement. Miles' CAIRA (Certified AI-Ready Accountant) credential - India's first AI credential built for accounting and finance professionals, with 30+ hours of NASBA-approved CPE - pairs naturally with the CPA for exactly that shift.

"AI is not replacing accountants. Accountants who know how to use AI are replacing those who don't." - Varun Jain, CEO, Miles Education

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much CPA exam time do you get per section?

Exactly 4 hours (240 minutes) of active testing per section - 16 hours across all four. The optional 15-minute standardised break after the first TBS testlet pauses the clock and does not reduce your testing time.

2. What is the CPA exam time limit to pass all four sections?

Once you pass your first section, you have a 30-month rolling window to clear the remaining three. Indiana, South Carolina and Washington extend this to 36 months. If a credit expires, that section must be retaken.

3. How should I split CPA exam time between MCQs and TBSs?

Roughly 70–90 minutes on the two MCQ testlets and 135–155 minutes on the three TBS testlets, leaving 15 minutes as buffer. FAR and BAR need the largest TBS allocation; AUD and ISC need the tightest MCQ pace because of question volume.

4. What are the US CPA exam dates for 2026?

Core sections (AUD, FAR, REG) run on continuous testing - any available day, Monday to Saturday, apart from short maintenance blackouts. Discipline sections (BAR, ISC, TCP) are offered only in the first month of each quarter: January, April, July and October.

5. How many times is the CPA exam conducted in a year?

Core sections are effectively available year-round, so there is no fixed number of attempts per year beyond waiting for your score before retaking the same section. Disciplines have four testing windows annually.
