CMA Exam Format Update
for 2026:
Essays Are Being
Replaced by CBQs

This is the biggest change to the CMA exam in years, so it leads this page rather than getting buried in it. IMA is retiring the traditional two-essay section in favor of Case-Based Questions (CBQs), a roughly 250-word business scenario, supporting exhibits, and a mix of structured question types (drag-and-drop, select-from-list, calculation entry) in place of free-form writing.

MAY - JUNE2026

candidates could choose either essays or CBQs; this window has now passed.

SEPT-OCT2026

CBQs are the only format for English-language CMA exams across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. (China, Taiwan, and Japan continue offering essays.)

The CMA Exam Already
Tests Real Data & Analytics Skills

It's not just the question format that's become more practical; part of what the CMA exam tests has quietly been evolving for years. Since 2020, Part 1 has included a dedicated Technology and Analytics section, accounting for 15% of the exam, according to the IMA's official Content Specification Outline. This section covers information systems, data governance, technology-enabled finance transformation, and data analytics. Combined with the introduction of Case-Based Questions, which assess how candidates solve realistic business scenarios rather than simply recall concepts, the CMA exam increasingly reflects the analytical and decision-making skills expected in modern finance roles.

To help candidates go beyond exam preparation, Miles integrates CAIRA (Certified AI-Ready Accountant) into its CMA program. While the CMA exam evaluates core technology and analytics concepts, CAIRA extends that learning through hands-on experience with AI workflows, automation, analytics, and agent-based tools used in today's finance teams. The result is a learning experience that prepares candidates not only to perform well in the Technology and Analytics section, but also to apply those skills confidently in the workplace.

CMA Exam: Overview of the Testing Windows

You're given three separate testing windows each year to choose from:

1

January - February

Jan 1 - Feb 28

2

May - June

May 1 - Jun 30

3

September - October

Sep 1 - Oct 30

What this means for you as a candidate is that you've got three full chances each year to conquer Part 1, Part 2, or both. Keep in mind you can only take one part per window, so choose wisely. With proper preparation and planning, you can complete both CMA exams in as little as 8 months.

CMA Exam Dates 2026 &
Registration Deadlines

Each window comes with its own registration deadline. Missing it is the academic equivalent of snoozing your alarm till the meeting starts you'll have to wait for the next window, roughly four months later.

Testing Window2026 DatesRegistration Deadline
January - FebruaryJan 1 – Feb 28February 15
May – JuneMay 1 – Jun 30June 15
September – OctoberSep 1 – Oct 31October 15

If you're searching for a single CMA exam date 2026, know that there isn't one fixed date within your chosen window, you schedule any available slot at a Prometric center (or via remote ProProctor) that works for you. Part 1 and Part 2 can be taken in any window, in any order, but only one part per window. You'll also need to wait until your score is released before retaking the same part so no, you can't sit Part 1 in January and retake it in February if it doesn't go your way.

CMA Syllabus & Subjects

The CMA course syllabus often searched as the CMA syllabus or CMA subjects is split into two parts:

Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance & AnalyticsIntegrated withstar iconCAIRA

Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance & Analytics

External Financial Reporting Decisions

Performance Management

Internal Controls

Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting

Cost Management

Technology and Analytics

Part 2: Strategic Financial ManagementIntegrated withstar iconCAIRA

Part 2: Strategic Financial Management

Financial Statement Analysis

Decision Analysis

Investment Decisions

Corporate Finance

Risk Management

Professional Ethics

This is the same 2-part US CMA syllabus regardless of where you sit the exam, which is why it's sometimes searched as the "US CMA syllabus" to distinguish it from other regional accounting qualifications more on what Technology and Analytics actually covers above.

Not CMA Foundation or
CMA Inter? Here's the
Difference

If you landed here searching for CMA Foundation, CMA Inter, or CMA Inter subjects, it's worth a quick clarification: those are levels of the Indian CMA, a separate three-stage qualification (Foundation → Inter → Final) from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). The CMA exam covered on this page is the US CMA, issued by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), USA just two parts, no Foundation or Inter stage at all. Part 1 does give you a stronger foundation before you tackle Part 2, but structurally, it's a different, shorter path. If your goal is an MNC, GCC, or global finance career, the two-part US CMA is generally the faster route to get there.

CMA Eligibility

Before you lock in your CMA exam dates, confirm you meet IMA's eligibility criteria:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (final-year students can also begin)

A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in management accounting or financial management, completed before starting or within 7 years of passing the exam

Active IMA membership

See the full breakdown on our CMA eligibility page.

CMA Exam Fees & Cost

CMA exam cost has three components, payable to IMA: an entrance fee, exam fees for both parts, and an annual membership fee with Miles' IMA Platinum Partner status securing you a bundled discount on all three. For the full, current fee table, see our dedicated CMA fees breakdown.

CMA Results: When and
How You'll Know

CMA results are released about 6 weeks after the end of your exam month for example, sit the exam in February, and you can expect your score by mid-April. Scores are posted to your IMA online profile, and IMA notifies you once they're live, so you'll know whether to plan your next window or move on toward certification.

How to Plan Your CMA
Exam

Knowing the CMA exam schedule isn't just about avoiding FOMO it's about winning the long game:

Plan strategically from your target exam date and start preparing at least 3 months in advance for adequate study time.

Avoid scheduling conflicts with major life events and protect your study schedule from professional or personal interruptions.

Consider starting with Part 1 it's generally regarded as more foundational, giving you a stronger base before tackling Part 2.

Allow contingency time for retakes building in room for a potential second attempt keeps you on track even if the first doesn't go your way.

Rescheduling and Cancellation Policies

You can reschedule or cancel your CMA exam, within the rules:

Reschedule through Prometric at least 72 hours before your appointment.

Cancellations must also be made at least 72 hours in advance.

Failure to attend, or last-minute changes, forfeit your fees.

Changing your date doesn't change your part if you registered for Part 1, you can't switch to Part 2 at the last minute.

FAQs

What are the CMA exam dates for 2026?

January 1 - February 28, May 1 - June 30, and September 1 - October 31, with registration deadlines of February 15, June 15, and October 15 respectively.

What is the CMA exam syllabus?

Part 1 covers Financial Planning, Performance & Analytics (including Technology and Analytics); Part 2 covers Strategic Financial Management.
