CMA Eligibility Criteria

To check whether you qualify to apply for the Certified Management Accountant certification, you’ll need to check off the following boxes:

Educational Background

You need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in accounting, but it’s a bonus if it is.

Work Experience

You need two years of continuous work experience in management accounting or financial management. Internships or part-time roles, unfortunately, don’t count.

Membership with IMA

You need to become a member of the Institute of Management Accountants before you can start your journey.

Note: You can take the exam before finishing your work experience. You’ll just need to complete it within seven years. This allows you flexibility while still climbing the ladder.

Each exam part is four hours long. That means three hours of multiple-choice questions and one hour for two essay questions. You'll need to pass both parts within three years of entering the Certified Management Accountant program.
