NEET(National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) is a standardized exam for the Indian medical aspirants. If you want to become a doctor in India, NEET is the only gateway!

Are you an Indian medical aspirant who wants to know more about the NEET examination and how it started? In this blog, let us look into the year the NEET exam started and it has evolved all these years! Are you interested in exploring more? Let’s go!

What Exactly is NEET?

NEET exam is a national level examination and it is applicable for both MBBS and BDS. NEET was introduced to streamline the admission process in Private and Government medical colleges.

Every year, NTA decides the cut-off scores for the NEET exams based on the number of candidates who appeared for the examination, the difficulty of the examination, etc. If you have the highest cut-off score, you can get into the Government medical college that has low tuition fees and provides high-quality education with expert faculties.

The cut-off score varies for categories such as OBC, General, SC, ST, etc. While you are applying for medical colleges in India, you should also check the NEET cut-off scores in every college to get admission.

When and Why NEET Exam Started?

The NEET exam officially started in 2013, but the journey to its implementation began much earlier. Before NEET, students seeking medical admissions had to appear for multiple exams conducted by different institutions and states.

NEET was introduced to unify these exams into one national-level test, simplifying the process for both students and institutions. NEET is the only gateway for Indian medical aspirants to get a medical seat in the Government medical colleges.

Usually, in Government medical colleges, the NEET cut-off scores are higher for the candidates to study medicine there.

The Evolution of NEET: A Timeline

2013: The Introduction of NEET

In 2013, the Medical Council of India (MCI) introduced NEET to standardize the medical entrance exam process across the country. NEET was intended to:

  • Replace AIPMT and state-level exams.
  • Ensure a transparent, merit-based admission system.
  • Reduce the burden on students by consolidating multiple exams into one.

However, the introduction of NEET was met with opposition from some state governments and private medical colleges, who wanted to retain their exams. As a result, NEET faced some legal challenges in its early years.

2014-2015: Legal Challenges

The implementation of NEET faced a series of legal hurdles:

  • In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down the NEET exam and allowed states and private colleges to continue their entrance exams.
  • In 2014, the government decided to allow NEET for undergraduate medical courses but faced challenges regarding its legality and the authority of the Medical Council of India.

2016: NEET Becomes the Official Exam for All Medical Admissions

In 2016, NEET was reintroduced and officially made the sole entrance exam for undergraduate medical courses.

This decision came after several years of legal proceedings and discussions. The Supreme Court finally ruled that NEET would be mandatory for admissions to all medical colleges in India, both government and private.

In 2016, NEET was also extended to postgraduate medical courses (MD, MS), making it the one-stop exam for all medical admissions in India.

Today: NEET as a Unified Exam

Today, NEET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and is the sole entrance exam for medical and dental courses in India. It has become an essential exam for medical aspirants and has been widely accepted as the standard method of admission.

The exam is held annually, and millions of students across India appear for it each year, competing for a limited number of seats in medical colleges.

Why Was NEET Introduced?

Previously, before the introduction of the NEET examination, the students had to appear for several examinations in different institutions.

For example, if they had to secure a seat in the AIIMS medical college, they had to study for the entrance exam in the AIIMS, similarly, they had to prepare for several other examinations in different medical institutions.

NEET provided a single, standardized exam for all medical colleges across India, reducing the complexity of multiple entrance exams.

Key Takeaway

While NEET serves as a standardized examination that reduces the stress of the students it also has its challenges. Uniformity and equal opportunity are the key highlights of the NEET examination.

However, the NEET exam revolves around the NCERT syllabus, which is very familiar to the students who studied at the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE). Hence, the students from the different academic backgrounds struggle to compete for the higher cut-off scores.
