Are you a 12th-grade student looking forward to cracking NEET in 2025? Congratulations, you have embarked on an important journey in your career. NEET(National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is one of the most difficult entrance exams in India.

However, cracking the NEET and securing medical seats in government medical colleges will help students reduce the hefty number of private medical seats. Despite the fierce competition, many students take a year gap and prepare for the NEET to score higher marks.

What is NEET?

NEET is a national-level entrance exam for the Indian students to get into the medical colleges. This standardized exam is for medical, dental, and related courses. NEET is organized by the National Testing Agency(NTA) to evaluate the knowledge of the class 12 students.

NEET Exam Structure

Mode of Examination:
NEET is a pen-and-paper (offline) exam where candidates mark answers on an OMR sheet.

Subjects and Questions:
NEET focuses on the science subjects covered in Classes 11 and 12:

  • Physics: 50 questions
  • Chemistry: 50 questions
  • Biology: 100 questions (comprising Botany and Zoology)
    Total: 200 questions (180 to be attempted).

Duration:
3 hours and 20 minutes.

Marking Scheme:

  • +4 marks for each correct answer.
  • -1 mark for each incorrect answer.
  • 0 marks for unattempted questions.

Maximum Marks:
The exam is scored out of 720 marks.

Eligibility to Apply for the NEET Exam

Now that we have looked into the purpose of the NEET exams and the structure, let us get into the eligibility criteria for the NEET exam. Make sure that you cover the following to apply for the NEET exams 2025:

Age Limit

The minimum age limit for the candidates should be around 17 years. On Dec 31st, 2025, the candidates should be 17 years old to apply for the exam.

The age limit for candidates in all states in India is constant. For general category candidates, the age limit to appear for the NEET exams is 25, and for the other candidates, it is 30.

Educational Qualifications 

The candidates appearing for the NEET exams should have completed their 12th grade in the science-related stream. The subjects should cover Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English. 

Minimum Marks in Class 12:

  • General category:

 Minimum aggregate of 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

  • OBC/SC/ST categories:

Minimum aggregate of 40% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

  • PwD category

Minimum aggregate of 45% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Number of Attempts and Score Validity

There is no limit on the number of attempts that students can take while applying for the NEET examination. You can attempt as many as you want within the age limit. The NEET score is valid for one year to get into medical colleges in India.

If you are planning to apply abroad, the validity of the NEET scores is around 3 years.
