Here is the detailed breakdown of the steps involved in cracking USMLE:
Step 1: This is based on the Basic Medical Sciences
- In this step, the main focus is given to medical subjects like pathology, anatomy, pharmacology, and biochemistry among others.
- Focuses on the scientific principles relevant to clinical practice.
Step 2: Clinical Knowledge (CK) This is based on the Clinical Sciences
- This step is to test the practical knowledge of the students. The hands-on experience you gained in the clinical rotations will help immensely in this step.
- Knowledge of diagnosis plays a key role in this step.
Step 3: Patient Management
- You have an unsupervised clinical setting in this step. The knowledge you gain in residency training helps you to apply medical knowledge in real life.
- The main focus here is patient management.
Note: The Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills) component, which tested practical skills, was permanently discontinued in 2021.
