Search for the US CMA Course Syllabus today, and you will be told that Technology and Analytics has jumped to 25%, that ESG has been bolted onto both parts, and that the whole syllabus was rebuilt for 2026. None of it survives a look at the source documents.
Here is what the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and its certification arm, the ICMA, have put in writing. The content of the CMA exam has not changed for 2026. The format of one section has. From the September/October 2026 window, essays are retired and Case-Based Questions (CBQs) take their place on English exams across most of the world.
That distinction is the whole story. It changes how you prepare without changing what you study.
The short answer
- Changed: the second section of each exam part. Two essays become two case-based questions.
- Changed: the question types. Drag and drop, fill in the blank, select from a list, and calculation, instead of typed prose.
- Changed: the calendar. May/June 2026 was the final window offering essays in English. From September/October 2026, CBQs are the standard format.
- Unchanged: the Content Specification Outlines (CSOs) and Learning Outcome Statements (LOS). Same 12 sections, same weightage, same coverage levels.
- Unchanged: exam price, exam length, credential name, passing score, testing windows, eligibility, and the experience requirement.
- Exception: Mainland China, Taiwan (China) and Japan continue to offer essays on English and local-language exams.

What is CMA? US CMA full form and course details in 60 seconds
The US CMA full form is Certified Management Accountant. It is awarded by the ICMA, the certification body of IMA (USA), and it was built in 1972 to measure competence in management accounting rather than audit or compliance. Where a CA or CPA is trained to report on the numbers, a CMA is trained to plan them, control them, and use them to argue for a decision.
Here are the US CMA course details that sit underneath the 2026 conversation.

What has changed in the US CMA course syllabus for 2026?
Nothing in the syllabus. Five things in the exam.
1. Essays are retired. Case-based questions take over
Every CMA exam part has carried 100 MCQs and two 30-minute essay scenarios for years. The essays asked you to write out your reasoning, and they were graded offline by human reviewers, which is why results took roughly six weeks.
From September/October 2026, the essay section becomes two CBQ sets. Each set opens with a business scenario of around 250 words, supported by exhibits such as financial statements or charts, followed by a group of questions tied to that scenario. You still get one hour for the section, and you should plan on roughly 30 minutes per set.
2. The question types are new
This is where the change bites. Instead of typing an answer, you will meet:
- Drag and drop. Move the correct item onto the matching option.
- Fill in the blank. Enter a value or a term into a gap.
- Select from a list. Choose the right answer from a dropdown.
- Calculation. Work the number and key it in.
The thinking is identical to what an essay asked of you. The output is not. A candidate who could write a strong paragraph about why a segment should be dropped now has to land the exact number and the exact classification, with nowhere to hide behind good prose.
3. The transition is already behind us
Testing window | Second section | Status as of July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| January/February 2026 | Two essays | Closed |
| May/June 2026 | Candidate's choice of two essays or two CBQs. Final window with essays in English | Closed |
| September/October 2026 | Two CBQs. Standard format | Open. Registration closes after 15 October |
| 2027 onwards | Two CBQs | Standard |
If you are reading this in the second half of 2026, the choice has already passed. September/October 2026 is the first all-CBQ window, and anyone sitting in it will face the new format whether they planned for it or not.
4. Scoring mechanics are cleaner, and the gate is the same
The 50% MCQ threshold has not moved. You must earn at least half the points on the multiple-choice section before the case-based section opens to you. Miss it, and the exam ends there.
Inside the CBQ section, you collect points for each question you get right, there is no penalty for a wrong answer, and partial credit still applies. The section carries the same weight the essays did, which is 25% of the part. What changes is the grading itself. Objectively scored question types do not need a panel of reviewers reading typed answers, which is the quiet reason IMA moved.
5. Three markets keep essays
Mainland China, Taiwan (China) and Japan continue to offer essay questions on both English and local-language exams. Everywhere else, which includes India, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Africa, moves to CBQs.

Why IMA made this change now
Mike DePrisco, IMA president and CEO, told Accounting Today in June 2026 that IMA is "moving away from the essay portion of the CMA" and replacing it with case-based questions, framing the shift as modernising the exam so that it pushes candidates to demonstrate understanding of business situations they will meet at work.
He made a second point that lands hard in India. For candidates whose first language is not English, a written essay can create an unintended barrier that has little to do with management accounting. Most testing bodies have already moved this way, the AICPA among them, because a case-based item tells you more about whether someone can apply a concept than a paragraph of prose does.
There is a market logic underneath it as well. IMA now has over 40,000 members in India, and India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia are where its growth is coming from. An assessment format that measures applied skill without taxing written English is a rational way to serve that base while holding the standard steady.
Where preparation is heading
The CBQ shift is a small signal of a larger move. IMA has expanded its competency framework from six domains to ten, adding AI, cybersecurity, data analytics and digital work to the traditional core. Part 1 already devotes 15% to Technology and Analytics. The exam is asking a question employers started asking first: can you apply this, with these tools, under these constraints?
That is the gap a CMA course syllabus alone does not close, and it is where Miles Education has been putting its weight. As an IMA Platinum Partner with 70,000+ global alumni, Miles teaches the US CMA with AI workflows and agents built into the programme rather than bolted on, targeting both parts in about eight months. Candidates also get free CPE access on Miles Masterclass for three years after certification, which is how the CMA exam stops being the finish line.
The AI layer is CAIRA, the Certified AI-Ready Accountant credential. It runs across three levels and around 90 hours of NASBA-approved CPE, from AI readiness on the Microsoft stack through applied AI across audit, tax and client services, up to a firm-wide AI operating model. The work happens in Miles AI Labs, where you build agents and workflows yourself: AP three-way match, bank reconciliation, AR collections, revenue recognition. Level 1 opens with a free live session on building your first AI agent in two hours, and the credential carries a Credly badge you can put on LinkedIn.
A CMA certification tells an employer you can think like a management accountant. A CAIRA badge tells them you can do it at the speed their finance team now runs at. In 2026 the two travel well together.
